I’m quite sure most of you have heard about sugaring. I’ve heard about it, but I haven’t tried – until my first visit at Hey Sugar.

What is Sugaring?

Sugaring is a waxing or hair removal method that uses sugar. Therefore, it’s natural compared to standard waxing, which uses chemical ingredients. Do you know that sugar waxing has been used since 1900 BC? Sugaring is also said to be less painful than chemical waxing since sugar wax sticks to the hair strands and not to the skin.

Since it basically uses sugar, anyone can actually do it home. The sugar wax ingredients are all in your kitchen! But I’d rather have the waxing done by professionals. Based on experience, it’s more painful to do it on your own. Maybe it’s because of the way I pulled the wax or because I anticipated the pain whenever I was about to pull it. Whatever the reason is, I vowed never ever to do it on my own!

And because I also got curious about sugaring, I wanted to try it! I visited Hey Sugar!, which offers waxing, threading and eyelash enhancement services. The first thing I noticed is its super dainty interiors. Florals and pastels are really my thing. From the outside, it actually looks like a cupcake store so I was quite sure that I was in for a sweet treat.

Hey Sugar! offers two kinds of wax, cold and hot, for different body parts. I was told that hot wax is less painful than cold wax. Well, this depends on the individual. In my experience, it’s the other way around since I find the hot sensation a little more painful. On the otherhand, others are not comfortable with the repetitive process of pulling the cold wax. So, it really depends on the individual’s preference.

Since I wanted to know how “less painful” is their hot wax is, I tried it for a brazilian.

I was directed to a private room, which is as pretty as the reception area. For hygiene, they have wipes readily available.

Here’s how the hot sugar wax looks like…

The brazilian hot wax service lasted for just about 20 minutes, which is pretty fast! All through out the process, my esthetician made me feel comfortable by chatting with me. Well, it helped me forget about the pain.

And because they market themselves organic, they use cornstarch instead of powder prior to waxing. The wax itself is made of sugar and calamansi, known to have whitening benefits. Then to soothe the skin after waxing, they apply virgin coconut oil. Everything’s indeed natural!

Now, the million dollar question, is it painful? Note that I have high pain tolerance, but it really is less painful compared to other chemical waxes. Although I have also tried other chemical waxes that have the same pain level as sugaring.

After waxing, the esthetician threaded the hair strands left. I appreciate this more than plucking since threading is less painful. What surprised me is after the waxing service, I also got a quick complimentary foot massage and a disposable underwear to let the skin breathe.

Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I would definitely go back. Probably, I’ll try the cold wax next!
